DirectX has always been an important graphic software in Windows operating system. Especially for games, it provides smooth performance and better gaming experience. It’s so much essential that games require to have DirectX specific files in order to make itself run on your PC. Now with Windows 10, DirectX version 11 is running, Windows has deprecated some of its old features available with DirectX 8.0 and DirectX 9.0 which however not required by new games but some of them are still required with older games.

DirectX 11 Update 11 is available to all software users as a free download for Windows 10 PCs but also without a hitch on Windows 7 and Windows 8. Compatibility with this software may vary, but will generally run fine under Microsoft Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP on either a 32-bit or 64-bit setup. I recently downloaded windows 10. When I tried to open Adobe PS Elements 12, it would not open and asked my to download 'Directplay'. I clicked the instruction in Windows and it went into search mode for ages with no result.

One important feature deprecated is Direct Play. The feature was enabled by default in older versions of DirectX but now, it has been automatically disabled and some Windows updates even removed this feature. So, if you are facing issue regarding DirectX DirectPlay while trying to install or play any old Windows game then here I am telling how to download and enable Direct Play in your Windows to play both new and old Windows games without any issues.

Enable Direct Play on Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10

Direct Play setting is available at the “Program and Features” Windows in Control Panel. If you are using Windows 8/8.1, right click on Windows and from the context menu, choose “Program and Features”. Windows 10 users don’t have this link directly available here so, after right-clicking, choose the “Apps and Features” option.

At Apps and Features Windows, on the right-hand side, Under Related Settings, you will find “Program and Features”. Click on it and now you’re on Program and Features window where you can see all install software & apps in your Windows.

Here, click on the “Turn Windows Features on or off” link available below View Installed Updates on the top-left corner. It will open a small popup window. Inside this small popup window, scroll down to locate “Legacy Components” and click its +Windows 10 education key generator. to expand it. Here, you’ll see DirectPlay. Tick the checkbox provided with DirectPlay and make sure the check box of Legacy Components is also tick.

Now press OK and restart your system. You’ve enabled DirectX DirectPlay. Now, try to install the game again you should not face any problem regarding direct play now.

If DirectPlay setting is not available then the current version of your Windows update might have removed the settings to enable/disable DirectX DirectPlay. To get it back, download Update for the IDirectPlay4 API of Microsoft DirectX 8.0x (DirectPlay) (KB839643) and install it in your Windows. Restart your system and now you should be able to locate Direct Play at Program and Features settings of your Windows operating system.

Microsoft DirectX 10 is a group of technologies designed to make Windows-based computers an ideal platform for running and displaying applications rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3D animation, and rich audio. DirectX includes security and performance updates, along with many new features across all technologies, which can be accessed by applications using the DirectX APIs.

Many former parts of DirectX API were deprecated in the latest DirectX SDK and will be preserved for compatibility only: DirectInput was deprecated in favor of XInput, DirectSound was deprecated in favor of the Cross-platform Audio Creation Tool system (XACT) and lost support for hardware accelerated audio, since Vista audio stack renders sound in software on the CPU. The DirectPlay DPLAY.DLL was also removed and was replaced with dplayx.dll; games that rely on this DLL must duplicate it and rename it to dplay.dll.

Here are a list of some improvements and modifications to the DirectX series up until the release of DirectX 10:

Direct3D 9: emulates Direct3D 9 behavior as it was on Windows XP. Details and advantages of Vista's Windows Display Driver Model are hidden from the application if WDDM drivers are installed. This is the only API available if there are only XP graphic drivers (XDDM) installed, after an upgrade to Vista for example.

Direct3D 9Ex: allows full access to the new capabilities of WDDM (if WDDM drivers are installed) while maintaining compatibility for existing Direct3D applications. The Windows Aero user interface relies on D3D 9Ex.

Direct3D 10 for DirectX 10: Designed around the new driver model in Windows Vista and featuring a number of improvements to rendering capabilities and flexibility, including Shader Model 4.

Overall: Due to the new driver model in Windows Vista and continuing through Windows 7, DirectX 10 is specially designed around those specifications, especially around ATI and nVidia cards.
